This has been a rough week at our house. We’ve been busy and everyone has the sniffles. Also my five year old learned to whistle. So that’s been fun. I had a couple of other posts planned to get out this week but this one came together first. 

A basic beanie is a great way to practice working circles. And you can take a basic beanie and add details and make it lots of things. 

The hardest part about hats, for me at least, is sizing. For some reason I think that babies all have really tiny heads. No seriously, when I first started crocheting hats I worked at a hospital and gave a few to the maternity ward. The were too small for even the average newborn. I had to start marketing them as doll hats. I’ve since realized that a little big is usually better. Especially for kids since  they grow so dang quickly. 

Another issue I have with a lot of crocheted hat patterns is that they are not long enough. Crochet hats can be cute or funny or sweet. But in my opinion they should also be functional and that means they’ll keep your ears warm! I do my best in my patterns to make the hats long enough to do just that. 

I use this Basic Beanie pattern as a basis for a lot of the “fun” hats I make. (I’ll get patterns for those too…) It took me a while to work out that these are the best sizes for me to make. For a long time I felt like I was always eyeballing it or trying to remember how I did it last time. Finally, I thought maybe I should write it down! So I did and now I’m sharing it with you!

Basic Beanie Pattern

Supplies Needed:

H/8 5.0 mm Hook (Hook size varies with hat size, check the beginning of each)

I/9 5.5 mm Hook

Any worsted weight (4) yarn

Needle for weaving in ends

Stitches used:

MR-Magic Ring

DC-Double Crochet

SC-Single Crochet

2DC- Double Crochet Increase, Do 2 DC in the same stitch to increase

Notes: These are all worked in joined rounds. Unless noted, each round will start with a Ch 2. The beginning chain does NOT count as a stitch.  At the end of each Round, Slip Stitch to the top of the first stitch of the round (NOT to the chain). 

If you feel like the hat is too long for your liking or the project you are using it for, you can adjust by taking out one or two rounds from the middle (after the increases are made).

XS (Infant Size)

With an H Hook

1) In a MR, do 10 DC (10)

2) 2DC in each around  (20)

3) *DC in next stitch, 2DC in next* Repeat from * to * around (30)

4) *DC in next 2, 2DC* Repeat from * to * around (40)

5) *DC in next 3, 2DC* Repeat from * to * around (50)

6-11) DC in each around (50)

12) Ch 1, SC in each around (50)

Finish Off, Weave In Ends

Sadly, there are no little babies in my house any more so I don’t have a handy model for the Infant-sized hat… 

Small (Toddler)

With an H Hook

This is my nearly 4-year-old boy in the Small (Toddler) size. He can wear it but it is tight and doesn’t quite cover his ears.

This is that same little stinker in the Medium (Child) size. It doesn’t have to stretch as much and it covers his ears too! Yay!
